WELLFLEET, MA— Mid-Cape Home Centers in Dennis, MA is providing critical assistance to the Wellfleet Food Pantry by picking up nearly two tons of the Pantry’s food supply in Harwich every two weeks and delivering it directly to the Pantry for distribution. In addition, Mid-Cape will donate a substantial amount of lumber to the Pantry for construction of a new, ADA compliant ramp for smoother access to the Pantry’s temporary trailer.

Both actions come at critical moments. Lacking the means to purchase and operate a suitable truck for the deliveries, the Pantry had relied on a volunteer whose aged truck was no longer up to the task. And, after moving to its new location in a rented trailer at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Wellfleet, the Pantry discovered that the access ramp supplied was too expensive, awkward to use and ADA non-compliant. Minus food and the ramp, over 200 food-insecure families in Wellfleet were facing loss of this significant support.

Mid-Cape’s food deliveries and the donated ramp materials have fended off both crises and made it possible for the Pantry to continue to operate at its new location.

The food– including fresh, frozen, boxed and refrigerated fruits, vegetables, meats and pantry staples– is shipped on laden pallets from the Greater Boston Food Bank. The Family Pantry of Cape Cod in Harwich receives shipments and coordinates distribution to several other local pantries.

Because of the need for continuous temperature and humidity control, prompt delivery of the shipments is critical. Mid-Cape’s enclosed box trucks, complete with pallet jacks and lift gates, not only speed the food to Wellfleet, but make it easier for Pantry volunteers to unload and store the food quickly and safely. The new ramp will be constructed to facilitate delivery.

“The Mid-Cape Team is honored to play a small part of the incredible operation the Wellfleet Food Pantry has provided for their town,” said Rich Grout, Mid-Cape’s Vice President of Operations and Distribution. “Our communities are very important to us, and we love to lend a hand wherever we can.”

Pantry Board President Sandy Galvin thanked Mid-Cape, “We are thrilled and relieved.  MidCape’s generous offers have solved two of our biggest challenges – getting the food to, and then into, the Pantry door. We and our customers are extremely grateful.”
